The idea is based on the concept of Men’s Liberation. Historically men had two responsibilities – go to work or go to war. The generation before ours was either faced with that decision or was the product of those who were. Both of my parents were displaced by war and my father did not have a good model for fatherhood – forced to work at 13 to support the family, beaten with a shoe by an angry father, and uprooted several times to avoid death, poverty and starvation. Now, the expectation is for us to be emotionally available and supportive to wives and children, play a big role with child rearing and household chores, to be good listeners, to be understanding, to be sensitive which can get complicated when we are trying to freely express our own needs. This was not the experience of many of our fathers - our models of manhood.
Plus, we are now being slammed with the body image challenges women have been facing for decades as men line the shelves on the covers of beauty magazines. Also, not the experience of our fathers.
As men, it is now our responsibility to take all of this on with a history of making ourselves emotionally unavailable intentionally – TO BE STRONG in the face of adversity. That was our training. But being strong means something different now!
So how do we do it? How do we meet these new challenges head on? How do we express our authentic selves? And show ourselves as capable? How do we honestly tap into our compassionate selves? How do we express our anger and our vulnerability in a safe way? Free from the pains of our own judgment and the judgment of others?
The Men's Group!
A ten-class curriculum that will help us all explore these new challenges, maximize our potentials, live happier, more authentic and satisfying lives. Classes will be a group setting and will have a specific format and plan with enough freedom for individuals to speak and receive support and compassionate challenge through the wisdom of group members, the wisdom of men.
